One Hell of a Ride

August Quinn

The sun sunk lower in the sky. Rain pelted the dreary scene and greasy pavement.

Sheltered under the meagre overhang of a derelict costume shop, I counted the dead flies festooned in the window display. Shadows danced in the unkempt interior. A dirty clown costume caught my eye and unease seized my gut.

A bus roared to a halt beside me, spraying filthy water. I quickly stepped aboard, encouraged by the sight of people chatting, carefree.

A strange numbness enveloped my senses, then dissipated. The smiles of the passengers suddenly became screams and sobs.

‘Welcome aboard. Next stop, Hell.’

Blood of My Enemy

August Quinn

Ask me, Hell is teenage girls.

Laughter follows me over the fence to the edge of the dwindling, stinky river where I find the football.

In the bathroom, my head feels tight, throat parched. Something small and black catches my eye: a leech gorging itself on my blood.

I pull it from my leg. A river of red follows. Drop it into my water.

Lydia snatches the bottle, unsuspecting, takes a gulp, and dumps the rest over my head.

I hate my life.

Lydia, eyes gleaming with malicious glee.

My blood boils. ‘Leave. Me. Alone,’ I growl.

Remarkably, Lydia leaves.
